Earlier this year, in April, I had the opportunity to travel to China as part of my MBA program with Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI) in Chile. I returned with a suitcase full of learning, meaningful experiences, and deep gratitude for the warm welcome from professors, colleagues, and old and new friends.

At BC&MC Law & International Business Consulting Ltd., we’ve worked with Chinese companies for years. But finally visiting the country, experiencing its culture firsthand, and gaining a closer view of its current business and political landscape—especially in the context of growing trade and geopolitical tensions—added valuable perspective to what we regularly encounter in our client work.

The centrepiece of the trip was the International Seminar jointly organised by UAI’s Business School and the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS). The program included lectures, company visits, and guest speakers offering a rapid yet insightful immersion into Chinese business culture, decision-making dynamics, and the trends shaping the region today.

Travelling and connecting with different cultures continues to challenge assumptions and reinforce the value of lifelong learning, both personally and professionally.

Meeting with FairWise Partners – Shanghai

While in Shanghai, I met with Philip Chen and Jacky Mao, founding partners of FairWise Partners (CPA) and members of BOKS International. Philip leads Assurance & Financial Advisory, while Jacky oversees Tax & Corporate Services. Over a table full of unique and delicious Chinese dishes, we discussed valuation, M&A, and the opportunities and challenges of doing business in China. We also explored the internationalization potential of Chinese companies and how BOKS could leverage its global reach and expertise to support that growth. Philip and Jacky shared practical advice on navigating cultural differences—insights no manual or lecture can truly capture.

Meeting with DaHui Lawyers – Beijing

In Beijing, I had the pleasure of meeting Mei Zhang, partner at DaHui Lawyers, another member of BOKS International and a firm recognised for its expertise in U.S.-China business matters. Our conversation focused on how ongoing geopolitical tensions are shaping investment trends, professional services, and business strategies. As a former APEC official and Chilean negotiator for APEC’s Ministers and Leaders summits, I found it especially valuable to compare experiences and understand how legal professionals on the ground are adapting and even coping with uncertainty.

Reflection

This trip reinforced how essential it is to listen, learn, and keep perspectives open, especially in a globalised business environment. Strengthening connections, expanding our knowledge base, and building trust across borders remains at the heart of what we do.

Being part of BOKS International continues to add significant value to this mission. Meeting fellow members in different parts of the world not only strengthens professional ties but also opens the door to real collaboration, sharing local expertise, building mutual trust, and ultimately delivering better results for our clients. It’s a reminder that global reach works best when grounded in local relationships.

Next Stop

We’re excited to continue what we’ve called BC&MC Business Diplomacy, with meetings planned in August with fellow BOKS International members in Dublin and Amsterdam, and of course, at the annual conference in New York later this year.

Comment from BOKS International

At BOKS International, we are delighted to see members like BC&MC taking full advantage of the alliance’s global reach. These visits exemplify the value of cross-border collaboration—building relationships, sharing local insights, and creating opportunities that benefit firms and clients alike. We look forward to seeing the next steps in Maria’s journey later this year and encourage other members to share their own stories.
