Corporate Counselors – Abogado de empresa is a law firm located in Madrid focused on corporations, both national and international and dedicated to providing clients with a prompt, efficient, and personal service.

They have many years of experience in all areas of business law, mergers and acquisitions of companies, litigation, international agreements, investments of all kinds, and bankruptcy proceedings.

We asked Luis Baños to answer our questions on some key issues in the legal sector.

In your opinion, what is the future for your profession?
The legal activity in Spain is challenged by an intense pressure to decrease our fees, due to three primary reasons:
(i) the huge amount of existing lawyers in Spain, many of them acting as freelancers working from home
(ii) new players in the market offering online services at very competitive rates thanks to limited fixed cost
(iii) the ability of the clients to find resources on the internet either cost-free or at a very low price.

What is your growth strategy?
We are focusing on very specialised services (like M&A and other corporate law services) that require expert knowledge available only at a minimal number of legal firms. We are working currently with a marketing agency to identify ways to attract leads looking for that kind of services.

Where do you see your firm 5 years from now?

Being positioned as a renowned legal boutique for corporate matters

What is your biggest challenge?
Making our potential clients understand that some complex legal matters require very specialised legal counsel to be sorted out efficiently and safely.

What percentage of your work is international?
Around 30% currently

What business advisory services do you offer?
– All kinds of corporate services (capital increases, investors, shareholders agreements, company formation for foreign clients, etc.)
– M&A full legal advise
– Labor counselling and litigation
– All kinds of business litigations (recovery, breach of agreements, competition, etc).
– Insolvencies

What was your main driver for being part of BOKS International?
The opportunity to reach foreign leads interested in doing business in Spain while at the same time having the opportunity to share experiences with the members of BOKS.

Where do you see BOKS International 5 years from now?
Hopefully, as a strong alliance of legal firms with a presence in the most important countries in terms of business opportunities.

How would you describe your typical client?
A company from the middle and low market.

Tell us about a recent international assignment
Last week we have been retained by a German group interested in acquiring a Spanish company. Also almost every month we are hired by a foreign company to incorporate a subsidiary in Spain.

How do you target clients who are looking for international services?
The internet (Google) and some local sites for business.

Do you specialise in a particular sector or service?
No, we can provide services to companies from any sector.
