We asked Mark Wirth  to answer our questions on some key issues in the accounting sector:

In your opinion, what is the future for your profession?

The way we do business has changed dramatically, and will continue to do so in the near future. We as accountants need to adapt fast so as not to be left behind. In my opinion, the future of our profession is linked to technology, more specifically, cloud accounting.

This allows us to be more agile and flexible, and enables us to be even closer to our clients, by giving them access to the accounting system and helping us provide timely reports and insights, and add real value for our clients.

What is your growth strategy?

We would like to brand ourselves as being different from other traditional accountants, and therefore our growth strategy hinges directly on our success at doing so.

We believe that many small to medium sized enterprises are being given a poor product by some of our competitors, and we really believe that we can offer something different. We would like to keep growing and become recognised as a big player in the local market.

Where do you see your firm 5 years from now?

Our goal is to grow our client base and team considerably, and to land some major local and international clients.

What is your biggest challenge?

Our biggest challenge is attracting and retaining top talent since Malta is currently an employees’ market. We are very proud of our young team and hope that they can continue to grow with us.

What percentage of your work is international?

At least 50%-60% our of client base is international.

What business advisory services do you offer?

We offer various business advisory services but mainly focus on company valuations, financial modelling and tax structuring. We also have a good track record with start ups in Malta and feel that this is a niche area for us.

What was your main driver for being part of BOKS International?

We strongly believe that we cannot provide our clients with a great service unless we have a global network of high quality firms that can assist in different ways. This gives us a competitive advantage over other firms in Malta.

Where do you see BOKS International 5 years from now?

BOKS International’s growth has been nothing short of spectacular during the past couple of years. We have no doubt that the alliance will continue to grow, and that we will form part of one of the biggest and strongest alliances in 5 years time.

How would you describe your typical client?

Our typical clients are young and vibrant and have understood that they do not simply need bookkeeping services, but a trusted financial advisor that can help them grow their business.

Tell us about a recent international assignment?

One of our clients holds a number of high profile investments (approximately 20) in private equity established in Eastern Europe. We have been appointed as independent valuers of this group of entities and have had the great pleasure of visiting some of these entities in recent months to understand their business and help us provide a more solid valuation of their businesses.

How do you target clients who are looking for international services?

As a member of BOKS International, we are able to offer them support and assistance in various jurisdictions.

Do you specialise in a particular sector or service?

We do specialise in startups, investment companies, marketing companies as well as shipping companies (Malta is a big player in the maritime industry).
